At Moonlight Dental Surgery in Slough, we offer emergency dental appointments, so if you have an unbearable toothache you should contact us as soon as possible. An infected tooth is one of the common causes of tooth pain, and we will do everything we can to see you as soon as possible and get you out of pain.
The first thing your dentist will do when you come into our Slough practice is to establish what is causing your discomfort. As well as causing pain, infected teeth can sometimes be accompanied by a dental abscess, which is an uncomfortable swelling of the gum.
If the pulp (the blood or nerve supply to the tooth) becomes infected through decay or injury, you will need a root canal treatment. The aim of this procedure is to clear the tooth of infection.
Some people are afraid of the term “root canal treatment” but the procedure is necessary to save your tooth. It is carried out under local anaesthetic and feels no different to getting a filling, although your appointment will be longer because root canal treatment is a skilled and delicate procedure. We also offer various sedation options for nervous patients.
Root canal treatment requires two appointments. At the first, your dentist will carefully remove all traces of infection from the root canal of your tooth and will thoroughly clean the canal. If you have an abscess this will be drained at the same time.
Your dentist will prepare your tooth for a filling and will place a temporary one, letting the tooth settle and ensuring all infection is gone. You will then be called back to our Slough practice for a second appointment at which the tooth will be permanently filled.
